Route through Colombia

I am seeking suggestions for a "safe" route through Coloumbia (direction of Ecuador). I've read that the areas outside of Cali and Medillin are especially dangerous. Does anyone know if this is the case? Would we be better off going around through Bogota? Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

Hi Patti.
People will tell you many bad things about every place we go, and we must take it like a grain of salt (sort of speaking). The route is no more dangereous than riding through our own most dangerous States; you just have to look like you know where you are going - not like you are lost, and go. Von Voyage....
