Route through Colombia

I am seeking suggestions for a "safe" route through Coloumbia (direction of Ecuador). I've read that the areas outside of Cali and Medillin are especially dangerous. Does anyone know if this is the case? Would we be better off going around through Bogota? Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

Colombia accommodation
Colombia is amazing. I have been to Bogota, Cartagena, Santa Marta and Medellin - all wonderful places! No need for worries! We stayed in the most amazing apartments that we booked through www.oasiscolombia.com, could really recommend! They also have some travel advise to share.

i'm happy to hear that roads in Colombia are safe! :) some friends of mine and me wanted to go for a road trip for a month across several countries in South America, and we are 2 girls and 3 guys, so of course we were a little bit afraid! but we are girls so that's normal!! :)
anyway, can you recommend me some nice places to see in Colombia, and where we can eat good food? :) we are looking for a rental car too and we saw this http://hotel.twenga.co.uk/, but i was wondering if we can book a rental car for cheaper once we arrived there!

Driving in Colombia
Very remote areas and off road if you rent a 4 x 4 for example, hire a local native guide to accompany you.
