Driving Central America & South America.
Texas to Panama
Wanting to drive from Austin to Panama in early September. Moving there with wife and kids... Any current information on driving thru the problem areas of Guatemala and Honduras, or are they the same as Mexico? Travel during the day and avoid big cities?
10 years previous experience of driving deep into Mexico surfing from Baja to Puerto Escondido without any problems but flat tires and "tipping" Federales...
how long you plan to travel for? Just a straight shot or sight seeing?
We planned on 16 days, but everything has changed. Now I'm shipping the truck and boat because my fellow travelers can't get out of work untill the end of September and we are beat down from the 100+ degree Texas heat.
Maybe we can drive back to Texas in a few years if it ever cools down and the economic dictators get a reality check.
I hear you on the heat. I just spent 2 weeks in Oregon, and I'm dying now that i'm back in the Texas heat.

You'll find largely the same issues in all the countries. I haven't heard anything new regarding Guat or Honduras, just follow the standard advices of DON'T STOP for roadside cops with flashlights (but no guns or cars), and ALWAYS stop for roadside checkpoints with guns.
