Driving from Texas through border to Honduras (+dog)
Hello All!
My name is Tito. I will be moving out of the U.S. at the end of March and relocating to Honduras. I am at a bit of a crossroads however. I am bringing 2 dogs with me and am unsure of the difficulty of getting them through all border crossings leading to Honduras. I attempted accessing info on the net, but came up empty handed:( If anyone can assist me in the right direction, that would be wonderful. I really don't want to fly them there as it is such a hassle, and very expensive! Please help!! Thanks, tito
wow thank you very much...sounds like it is definately possible. how is the pan american hwy?? any idea how long it takes for a trip of that magnitude? i will definately check out the 7001 form!
globohobo, keep us updated on this!
hey, it took me less than a week to get to costa rica from chicago. and thats with sleeping most of the nights. onle 2 nights we drove through none stop because we couldnt find decent hotels.
really??? wow sounds like a great trip. how long to you suppose the trip from new orleans to honduras would take??
yo, from new orleans to honduras can take as long as you want. for a serious trip to get there asap, you could prolly get there quicker than i did. less than a week for sure. just know the right route for sure. its an awesome trip. what parts of honduras u plannin on goin to?
Hi Tito -
A quick update on the dog to Honduras. We crossed at El Floridio from Guat which was the most incredibly easy, friendly, fantastic crossing in the world. Honestly, they were great on both sides. As for the dogs, be sure to have your paperwork in order and when you cross into Guat (and Belize if you're going that way) be absolutely certain (INSIST) they stamp your either rabies cert or your form 7001 when you enter AND when you exit. Honduras aduana was very particular about that. They'll come out and look at your dogs, too, to be sure they're healthy. Don't know about actually importing them - they didn't charge me to bring them through for transit. Alternatively, if you can keep them quiet, and don't plan to bring them back up you can not stop at that building - they don't come out and check, we actually just happened to stop into the wrong little building.
Any more questions and I'd be happy to try to answer them for you...

wow, thanks for the information. I will have them fully updated on their shots. I really just want to make sure that all borders will be that nice, as I am going through Mexico (Pan American Hwy) to Honduras. Once I get to Honduras I will be moving there to live. Does this change anything? I will have a lot of things for the move as well. I just want to make sure that I am able to have safe passage in, and my brother (who is driving me) has safe passage back to the States.
Yes, logistically, moving to Honduras changes things but not for Mexico or Guatemala. You should look at the USDA website for importation of dogs and cats to Honduras. I THINK (heavy emphasis on think) you just need your dogs to be current with their vacc, have the form 7001 I told you about and you'll be fine. If you're in Texas, I know Houston has a state cert. vet and you can call them for any info - the one in Sacramento was a great help to me although they made it seem like it would be more difficult than it is. Don't worry about it, though. I stressed and stressed because I couldn't get much info, but it's been a breeze with my dog and GREAT deterrent for searches and the whole bit. We put a sign in the window that says "Perra Brava" and people generally stay back. :) Our biggest problem is with strays - our dog is aggressive with other dogs and it's been a challenge to say the least.
Good luck!
My trip is rapidly approaching but I cannot find a good online map to give me the directions I need! I will be going from New Orleans to Honduras...any suggestions???
ITMB makes good ones. Here's for all of C.A.
Wow thats fast,we hit belize from vancouver bc in 8 days, and honduras in 11.
good luck

Hi Tito --
We're in Guatemala with our dog now. As for Mexico and Guat, it's absolutely no big deal - I had to FORCE the folks at the Talisman crossing from Mexico to Guatemala to stamp my dog's rabies cert and that was just because I don't want a hassle leaving. In Mexico they don't care if you take dogs through - everyone brings them. I can let you know in a couple of weeks about Honduras, but you'll have a different set of rules for importation as I do with transit.
Bring your current rabies cert. and if you want to be REALLY sure you're ok, go to a USDA approved veterinarian and get a form 7001 (it has to be 7001) health certificate, then you CAN (if you want) go to the state vet (there is only one in each state) and get it endorsed. We did it but haven't needed it at all. If you call them they'll tell you everything you need for importation as well.
Hope that helps.
Good luck.
Leah
