Advice on crossing and roads
Hey -- we´re in Oaxaca and should be in Tapachula in a couple of days. I read that Talisman is not the border to use to use the other but that dumps you on 200. Looking at the map, it looks better to take the north route to Panajachel, but heard there are some highway robberies going on up there. Anyone?
Thanks!!

i completely second that about San Chris / La Mesilla
Oh man, doesn't it figure? The first chance I got to look at my computer and I've gone the wrong way! We'll be crossing at Talisman in the morning. Shit. Maybe on the way back....
Thanks guys.
My advice is to go back to Mexico, go to San Cristobal, and then go back into Guatemala at La Mesilla. You are missing a trip highlight.

Hahahahahaha!!!! It is beautiful driving through the mountains but HELL on our nerves and the van! We´ve been having some mechanical problems the whole way and the old beast really doesn´t seem to like altitude. We may hit S.Cris on our way via Palenque, but not going back. Plus there is horrific road construction right now. Thanks for the tip, though!
If you go to San Chris, make sure you go to Revolucion bar. Don't miss the upstairs part of it.
We have decided to enter guatemala through belize, down to rio dulce, over to antigua, then back up to the east coast of hondurus.Any tips guys?
By the way, where is this drive thru zoo at the guat/hond border? We really want to stop there.
Thx guys...rob
Honduras doesn't have an east coast - just north and a little bit of unpleasant coastline on the south. The northeast coast in Honduras has no road access at all, and the northwest has some accessible coastline a stone's throw from Rio Dulce. The drive from Rio Dulce towards Antigua is fairly dull, so if you really want to go to the northwest coast of Honduras, cross over from Rio Dulce, hang at the coast towns, and then head south through Honduras and cross back into Guatemala at Copan.
rio dulce is cool IF you go on the boat out to livingston (leave the car at one of the marinas or make a deal somewhere) OR if you go to the hot waterfall of El Pariaso (spelling?) which you can drive or take a bus. That waterfall is awesome and one of my highlights. Livingston is cool as well. So different...

If you are going to Panajachel, I would recommend going through San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas and then crossing at La Mesilla. The drive is beautiful, the crossing is easy, and everything felt really safe to me. It'll take longer since you are driving through the mountains, but it is really lovely and worth it.
