Driving Central America & South America.
Friends on the road
I received a phone call from Brownsville and two friends have entered Mexico yesterday on their BMW motorcycles head for Panama City and points south to the southern Patagonia. Chris and Harry are experienced motorcyclists and both speak Spanish. They made it from Michigan to Brownsville Tx in four days which was as good as I could do in a car last January on my way to Costa Rica. If you happen to see two men in their 60's riding matching BMW's, say hello to Harry and Chris. If you are interested in their ride you can follow it on the net at: http://www.patagonia-bound.blogspot.com/ . If I had both the bike and funds I would be joining them, but I made the drive down to Costa Rica last year and that was one of my adventures. Just wanted to let everyone know that there are others out there having this adventure.

My two amgios are now in Panama and should make Panama City today. They left Michigan by motorcycle on December 27, were in Brownsville by Dec 31, making it from the TX Mex border to Panama City in 15 days total. They did this taking one day off in Oaxaca, and two days off Tamarindo, Costa Rica that I know about. They may have taken a day in San Cristobal but I do not know that for sure. This has caused me to rethink time required in touring Central America, if what you want to do is drive or ride as in this case, it takes a lot less time than if what you want to do is site see and hang out. I am one of the hang out people, Chris and Harry are into the ride. They should have no problem making it to agrentina on schedule.

yeah you really gotta factor in the hang-out time. And getting sick time... Sooner or later you'll get some bug and need to be near a toilet, or at the least won't feel like pushing hard. Take time!
We totally (TOTALLY) underestimated hang out time. We originally planned to go to Panama, but now are thinking we absolutely don't have the time. Only 2 1/2 more months and we won't be leaving Panajachel until Monday or Tues. Soooo, now we think another month or so for Guatemala and Copan (quickie border crossing and hopefully easy) then Belize and Eastern Mexico. We're kinda bummed but at the same time really hate just chugging along, seeing it all through the window. Not really our style as we're used to backpacking for months in one or maybe 2 countries. It's all what you like, I guess.

awesome to know! let them know that we'll be trying to follow their adventures, and if they can, i'm very interested in border requirements and people's experiences. I've been trying to compile a good list how people got through. Happy New Year!
