Driving Central America & South America.
Which country to buy/sell a car in S. America?
December 30, 2008 - 8:47pm
Hi,
My partner and I are looking to travel around South america for a few months. We prefer travelling on our own and thus are interested in an option of driving around. We spent four months driving in Europe last year.
Given that we would be coming from New Zealand we would need to pick up a car somewhere in SA, and dispose of it at the end. Naturally we would be looking to buy second-hand for budget purposes.
BAs would be the cheapest city for us to arrive in - but Rio, Santiago and Lima would be not too much more.
Are there any countries where buying and/or selling of a vehicle are better - perhaps due to price and resale value or ease of paperwork?

In most Mercosur countries the procedure seems to be the same:
you buy a car from other travelers, go to a notary and set up a written statement that the new owner is fully authorised to use the vehicle, and then you drive across the nearest border to exchange money/car between the 2 border posts...
ATTENTION: of you buy a local car in Argentina you are not permitted to take it across any border (even not to Ushaiha ¿spelling? - you have to cross through Chile) for the first year of ownership!!!
BTW: we want to sell our truck camper after March this year:
