I'm planning to drive to Panama and back in the Fall of 2007, probably leave in September or October. I am planning on a 2 month trip which will hopefully give me enough time so I'm not too rushed getting there and back. I'm either going to buy a used ambulance or used mini school bus for the trip. It would probably be easier for me just to buy a pick-up and truck camper but I want to drive something that's "unique" with lots of storage and easy to secure. I live in South Carolina so I'll take the eastern route down through Mexico into Belize and then on to Panama. I've got various passengers lined up for different stages of the trip. I'm excited and will hopefully have a web-site up before the end of this year. If I pull this trip off my next trip will be to South America in 2009 and then Africa a couple of years after that.

Sounds awesome! We were thinking about a short bus, too. I guess you could put a padlock of some kind on the entry door.

With that time frame, we'll probably be in similar places at the same time on our next trip -- I'll buy the first round!

FYI, I'm going to install some blogging software / trip logging software of some kind here in a couple of weeks so that individuals can log their progress if they want to. Our friends and family really liked to hear progress reports, and that's better than mass emails!

your time frame sounds a little short to experience what is there..

i appreciate your eccentricity though, i would take a vehicle i can find parts for.

good luck

Yeah. Wish I could plan a longer trip but 2 months is gonna be about all I can get away with at my current job right now.
As far as the vehicle, I've purchased a Ford E350 Ambulance with a 7.3 Diesel engine. It should be reliable and I think there are quite a few Ford dealers throughout Central America.
